New recycling rate targets for packaging are creating new requirements for household food packaging. In addition to the primary task of avoiding food waste through proper storage and packaging, the main focus is now shifting to the integration of food packaging into the circular economy.
Sought after: sustainable design and materials
Given that a sufficient level of quality and product performance have to be maintained, the potential for material savings is already almost exhausted. However, there are exciting approaches in the field of sustainable packaging design, including the use of alternative materials from renewable resources.
Room for improvement: recycling of household-related packaging waste
The collection and recycling of household-related packaging waste is known to be more difficult than that of industrial waste. This is one particular area where recycling and material recovery can still be significantly improved. In addition to innovative sorting and processing technologies, the inclusion of recycling requirements in product design plays an important role.
Solutions needed: circular economy for food packaging
The legal requirements for packaging that comes into direct contact with food are high. Here too, the focus must be on developing solutions that will expand the application field while taking product safety into account.
