Edible, biodegradable, reusable: What impact can these concepts have on preventing packaging waste and food waste at home?

10/24/2024

It is perhaps worth repeating that the main purpose of packaging food at home is to prevent food waste, which has the potential to cause significant damage to our global ecosystem. Not only does food production use a significant amount of fertile land, it also produces a significant amount of CO2.

At the same time, it is recognised that food packaging is a problem in its own right, as it is linked to the wider issue of plastic pollution. As the causes of littering are many and varied, including open landfill sites and negligent consumers, it may be that recyclable packaging is not the optimal solution to prevent this.

Demanded: Sustainable packaging

There seems to be a growing awareness of the need for more sustainable food packaging solutions. With this in mind, the Council of the European Union has outlined a strategy to reduce packaging waste. This is where edible, reusable and biodegradable packaging can play a role, as ideally they don't contribute to the plastic pollution problem and at the same time prevent food waste.

Consumer behaviour is crucial

It is clear that consumers want packaging that is convenient to use and dispose of, and that they are willing to pay for it. It would therefore be beneficial to consider ways to encourage the development of these concepts - edible, biodegradable, reusable - on an industrial scale. This could help to reduce costs, encourage research into materials with better properties, solve the problem of sorting and, last but not least, learn about consumer acceptance and behaviour.
